Supportive Housing Project
The Outreach and Social Justice Committee of St. Mary’s Anglican Church has initiated a study to determine the feasibility of building and operating a project to provide housing and supportive services to persons with mental illness and physical impairment. The project is based on needs identified by the Family Advocacy Committee of The Krasman Centre. The motivation is to fulfil our Christian obligation to serve and protect the vulnerable in our society.
The study is being financed by a grant of $10,000 and a forgivable loan of $10,000 from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. The study will include a needs assessment In addition to the assessment the financial feasibility of the project,.
To date we have incorporated a not-for-profit corporation to conduct the study and to develop and operate the project. We have engaged the services of a consulting firm and established a board of directors. We are developing our vision and by-laws and will be applying to Canada Revenue Agency for charitable registration.
The board is comprised of seven directors from a variety of faiths. Several of the directors have children with serious mental health issues including schizophrenia.
Approval and success of the project will depend on the availability of land and on financial support from all three levels of government as well as support from churches and the local community.
