Sanctuary Layout
Senior & Intermediate Server's Responsibilities:
Prayer Books
-Make sure that there is the appropriate service book, bulletin and a hymn book at each seat (For each of the servers, deacon, subdeacon and ministers)
Who's Who?
-Is everyone there? (Check posted schedule) If you're short someone by about 10:20, try to find another server that could fill in
-Make sure everyone signs in, if they don't please note who served yourself.
-Double check that everyone knows which job is their's and that everyone is doing a job that they have been trained for (a list will be posted)
Candles
-Light the candles before the service, about 10:25 (or make sure they get lit epistle candle first, gospel second)
Chapel
-Everyone should be in the Chapel just before 10:30 for the prayer along with candles and the cross (and banner if necessary).
Gospel
-Try to keep attention of other servers so that everyone knows when to leave for the procession
Offertory
-If you are able to keep an eye out to see when the sidesperson is coming with the collection, you can nod to the Gospel side acolyte.
Server's Responsibilities:
Before Service:
Robe up
Make sure you have a bulletin and service book at your seat
Light candles (Epistle side first)
If the Pascal candle is to be lit, lite it after the Gospel candle
Make sure some one has matches to light processional candles
Meet in the Chapel
Procession
Walk behind the choir, in front of the subdeacon(wears black and white)
Bow at the altar steps
Proceed to server's seat, around the altar stairs and up at the side.
Gospel Procession
Keep alert to see when to leave:
If it is a hymn you will usually leave somewhere in the middle
If it is only a very short melody you will leave at the beginning
If there is an anthem, you'll leave as soon as they've finished
Make sure you know which is the case for that Sunday
Come to the base of the altar steps, face forward
Wait for the deacon to pickup the Gospel and bow
Bow and follow behind the candles, down the aisle, till the crucifers stops
Turn around and stand between the two candles
The deacon will give you the Gospel to hold, hold the book at an appropriate level to be read, DON'T hold it flat
NOTE: Be aware the with the new Gospel pages may have to be turned
You will be given the Gospel to carry back
Step to the side to allow crucifer and acolyte to pass
Carry Gospel up, cross facing forward
Place Gospel on Altar to the right side of the Epistle candle and return to seat
Offertory Hymn/ Preparation of the Gifts
Hand the deacon the chalice with the burse on top at the very beginning of the hymn
The deacon receives bread and wine from the greeters
Remove the stoppers from the cruets
The deacon may need bread, hold bread box open facing the deacon
Next the wine may be needed, hold the wine in your right hand and the water in your left (If there are handles, hold them facing away from you)
Hand the deacon the wine and switch the water to your right hand. Take the wine in your left hand and hand the deacon the water. Switch the wine to your right hand, and take the water in your left hand.
Put the cruets back on the credence table and replace the stoppers
Wash the priests hands (and do the same for anyone else who steps forward)
When the Deacon has finished preparing the table, step forward to the altar along with the priests and subdeacon
Stand at the altar for the duration of the Eucharistic prayer
Step back to your seat to receive communion
Communion
After receiving communion take the extra chalices to the altar
Be prepared to get the bread or wine from the aumbry or anything else
When you are no longer needed you can sit
After Communion
Stand by credence table
If anything not containing bread or wine is handed to you, place it on the credence table
Anything containing wine is to be given to a lay administrator to be taken out to the sacristy, as it is blessed
Bread is to be placed in the aumbry in the already existing dish
When you are done return to your seat
Recessional Hymn
Be prepared to take wine from the lay assistant and place it in the aumbry if necessary
Make sure the candles on the altar are extinguished (the Epistle acolyte can do this)
The acolytes and crucifer will begin to move when the choir starts down the stairs
Line up in front of the altar with the rest of the sanctuary party
Follow out behind the choir
After Service
WAIT for organ music to begin, return to your seat to return anything to its place, collect your belongings, etc.
If the pascal candle or advent wreath is lit, extinguish it
HANG-UP your ROBE ie. on a hanger (no points otherwise!)
Take robe home if dirty and CLEAN IT
Banner Bearer's Responsibilities:
Procession
Walk behind choir as usually
Leave yourself a good metre of space in front of you
Once you're past the balcony, lift the banner high enough to see under it
Stop at sanctuary step to acknowledge and continue around base and place the banner in its stand
Gospel
Same as usual, doesn't involve banner
Recessional
Leave your seat when the other servers do
Get the banner, stand near the banner's stand and face congregation
After the dismissal, follow behind the choir to the back
Remember to lower the banner when you reach the balcony
Crucifer's Responsibilities
Before the Service
Robe up
Make sure you have a bulletin and service book at your seat
Take the cross out
Meet in the Chapel
Procession
When everyone is assembled in the Narthex (choir, santuary party) enter the church and wait at the Warden's wands
Once hymn starts, wait for everyone to begin singing before proceeding
If there is Sunday school, turn to the Gospel side and stop at the front
Wait for the children's talk and be prepared to lead the children out of the church come back quietly up the side aisle and place the cross in it's holder
NOTE: If there is no Sunday school, proceed to the altar steps and proceed to your seat as if after the Gospel procession
Gospel Procession
At the appropriate time, take the cross down the two altar steps and in front of altar
Come to the base of the altar steps, face forward
Wait for the deacon to pickup the Gospel and bow
Bow and lead down the centre aisle
Stop just before the Warden's Wands and turn to face the front of the church
After the reading, once the server and Gospeler have stepped to the side, begin to walk back
Stop at the altar steps and wait for the acolytes
Bow together
Walk behind the Gospel side acolyte to the corner of the steps, turn and walk up the stairs ahead
Take your seat
Recessional Hymn
When the choir start to move down the stairs, take the cross down the two altar steps, across and through the centre
(If there is no choir, wait to the second or third last verse depending on the length of verses)
Walk to the base of the sanctuary step and turn to face the cross
If there is a choir, when they reach the first pew, bow and proceed out of the church
If there is no choir, when the sanctuary party is lined up in front of the alter, bow and proceed out of the church
After Service
WAIT for organ music to begin, return to your seat to return anything to its place, collect your belongings, etc.
HANG-UP your ROBE ie. on a hanger (no points otherwise!)
Take robe home if dirty and CLEAN IT
Acolyte's Responsibilities
Before the Service
Robe up
Make sure you have a bulletin and service book at your seat
Take the candle out (make sure someone has matches)
Meet in the Chapel
Procession
When everyone is assembled in the sanctuary, follow the Crucifer into the church and stop a couple of steps behind
Once hymn starts, the Crucifer will wait for everyone to begin singing before proceeding
Follow a couple of steps behind the Crucifer and walk at the same speed as the other Acolyte
Walk up the Sanctuary step and stop at the base of the two altar steps.
Bow together, walk around the corner of the two steps and take the candle up the side of the steps and put it in its holder
Take your seat and find the appropriate hymn.
Gospel Procession
At the appropriate time, get your candle and go down the two side altar steps and across to the front of the altar
(The Crucifer will go ahead of the Gospel side acolyte and stand between the two Acolytes)
Come to the base of the altar steps, face forward
Wait for the deacon to pickup the Gospel and bow
Bow and follow the Crucifer down the centre aisle
Stop just before the Warden's Wands and turn to face the centre of the aisle
Leave enough room for the server to stand between the two candles.
Once the server and Gospeler have stepped to the side, follow the Crucifer back
When you get to the altar steps, stand beside the Crucifer
Bow together
Walk around the corner of the steps and place your candle in its holder
Take your seat
Recessional Hymn
When the choir starts to move, get your candle and walk down the two side steps
Don't turn towards the centre, walk straight and down the sanctuary step
Walk to the centre of the step and stand beside the Crucifer
When the choir/sanctuary party is ready, bow and proceed out of the church
After Service
WAIT for organ music to begin, return to your seat to return anything to its place, collect your belongings, etc.
HANG-UP your ROBE ie. on a hanger (no points otherwise!)
Take robe home if dirty and CLEAN IT
Epistle side Acolyte's Responsibilities
Beginning of the Recessional Hymn
Extinguish the altar candles during the first verse of the hymn, Gospel side first
Gospel side Acolyte's Responsibilities
During the Offertory Hymn
Watch to see when the Sidesperson starts walking up the aisle with the collection
Walk down the two Altar steps and to the centre
Put your arms out to take the collection plate
Turn around and walk up the two Altar steps
Wait while the minister blesses the offering
Place the offering at the end of the altar, beside the candle
Return to your seat
